Facing challenges

St.Mary's College


My heart was racing, sweat dribbling down my cheek, I was not ready. The car dragged closer and closer towards the college I was applying to. Minutes felt like seconds, we entered the car park and still, I felt apprehensive. Having a flood of thoughts overflowing my mind, ‘What if I won’t get accepted, what if I say the wrong thing, what if I don’t make it in, what if everything falls apart’, I thought constantly. The car was parked.

Each step I took the more I hesitated on taking this interview. The sun’s pressure, pushing against my chest as if there was no air to bare. The moment my parents and I entered the office there was complete silence, we sat ourselves down onto fancy and elegant seats. Then, a student just like me, walked past in silence, she looked agitated and by the look on her face, this is the point where I hit Rock Bottom.  

Moments later, a woman dressed in a high defined suit with bright sharp red (with the prediction) of 10-inch heels came into the waiting room. A straight and firm voice called out travelling in my ear my full exact name. We followed her into a hall, dark and narrowed, an eerie feeling seeped into my mind. The principal or should I say the dean, opened a door to us, as we entered the room I was in complete awe. Every word that came out of my mind has been forgotten. Sunshine gleamed throughout the room, displays of various confident quotes and of course an apple on a desk, this made me have a warm feeling and content.

The first few questions ran past my mind as if there was nothing to worry about, as I thought. Then, the last question …. at this point my heart started skipping beats and intense pressure tightened in my chest … the words met my ears the tension-filled me. “Why should we accept you as a St. Mary’s student?’.
I had no choice but to say what my heart wanted to express.
“I know that this College is the place where I belong, I am a  confident, committed, trustworthy and reliable student, being here will help me to continue to be a successful student and a role model for others ” I was ready.

Chemical fizz

WALHT: understand the areas of the what our senses from constiuents.

It was the year eight’s eighth week in Technicraft (science class), it had begun with 5 substances; Icing Sugar, Sodium Carbonate, Vita fresh, Citric Acid and Tartaric acid, following with a saucer.

Paper towels were provided for each person in able to observe the senses (of the state, texture, smell, colour and taste) from the substances. With these levels of substances and senses left the year eights thinking in a whole new different level of understanding, from which of a chemical reaction would the substances create once combined? There wouldn’t have been a chemical reaction as a state of a liquid hasn’t been added.

When H2O combines with a series of solid (powder) combined together it creates a chemical reaction which activates gas pockets.

States of matter

WALHT: Observe and discuss the relation when 2 states of matter when combined.

Cornstarch is a substance which has a solid state of matter. Water is a substance which has a liquid state of matter and mixing these two substances creates a colloid which has a combination of 2-3 states of matter.

Materials:
50mls Cornstarch
15mls Water
Knife
Container

Method:
  1. In a shallow clear container add the cornstarch
  2. Add the water bit by bit and stir while doing the process.
  3. Once done, experiment on this solution and see the changes from the state of matter.


The reaction between the substance of cornflour and water mixed together created  a solution that has the ability to have strong viscosity when strong pressure is applied to the colloid and as when you apply a gentle pressure to the liquid it instantly forms its state to a liquid.

Making a bubble inside a bubble


Equipment:
  • Plastic container
  • Image result for bubble insided a bubble150ml soap solution; water, detergent and sugar
  • Straw
  • Flat surface (preferably a table)

Instructions:
  1. Dip your hand into the solution and wipe it against the table.
  2. Soak the end of the straw into the solution and blow a bubble to an appropriate size.
  3. Immediately dip the end of the straw into the solution again and slowly adjusting your straw into the middle of the bubble and blowing another one
  4. Repeat this step until you get the amount of bubbles you can blow.

Hypothesis:
I believed that it was possible to create a bubble inside a bubble and accomplished layers of seven.

Conclusion:
Creating a bubble inside a bubble is a temporary and a permanent experiment as the bubble doesn’t last a long period of time. However, this concludes that you are not able to get the various layers of bubbles back.

Making bubbles

It was Thursday the fourth of May, breeze whistled through the air, the room 8 students were on their way for the first day of Term 2 for Technicraft. This Term our topic in Tech (short for Technicraft) was Science. We were learning about Bubbles, Froth and Foam, which relates to one topic.

As I entered the classroom a gast of heat wave bursted onto my face, the cold breeze liberated my body. We sat on our designated seats and what a surprise, the boys were separated from the girls. We were given 2 pieces of paper to record the reaction on our experiment. Our group begun with the experiment of investigating the comparison between blowing bubbles with soap and without. The difference was a complete opposite as the first experiment (without soap) appeared with bubbles in seconds. On the other hand, the second experiment (with soap) created a heap of bubbles almost overfilling the beaker. It was a learning experience at Tech and hopefully we would have a great time next week.

Volunteering in the Panmure

It was Monday the 24th of April, my cousin (Jane) and I volunteered at the Panmure Library as a sign for our St John cadet community service.

“Ring, ring, ring ring”. Out of nowhere a loud and obnoxious sound came buzzing in and through my ear. I woke up in shock as if a loud marching band came right past my room intentionally to wake me up. I looked down my bunk and saw Jane who slept past the deafening sound of the alarm clock.

Looking at the time it was 8:30am which gave us 30 minutes to get ourselves ready.
15 minutes past and we both were still on our life grabbing devices until we realised that we only had 15 minutes left to hold. Rushing through the hallway we ate our breakfast in a world record of time, then rapidly wore new clothes and brushed our teeth with moments of time passing we were out our door and on our way to the Library. The hot humid sun glazed upon our eyes and melted our feet that held us back miles away from our destination, each step I took the sun beated against my chest.

The glaze of the Library filled us with joy , we raced to the door and the second we stepped inside the Library freshened our body and spirit by the penetrating breeze from various air-cons surrounding the Library. We rushed to the counter and politely asked for a task to do and in a blink of an eye, the Librarian speechless bursted with words and immediately informed us our task. We were asked to cut out a variety of shapes from coloured paper for the holiday program (making robots).   Squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, stars, trapezoids and shapes made by our own imagination were made by numerous colours.

One hour of crafting dragged like watching grass grow, the last piece of paper was shaped into a triangle (we were permanently done). As we told the Librarian we were finished with our task, two pieces of red velvet cake were held up given to us, our mouths dropped down to the earth’s core. We thanked her with all our heart and soul. We delicately packed the cake into our bag as if it was worth $1000 and walked out the Library with pride (feeling satisfied after the good deed we accomplished especially the cake we were given). The sliding door opened and a gast of heat wave rushed through our bodies, our satisfaction flipped into a body collapsing mood.

Doing a good deed in the Library felt great and next time doing more than one would be the biggest goal I’ve ever accomplished and hopefully you would too.
