SML- Summer Learning Journey Week 1 Day 2

Day 2 – Learning the basics

Now that you have chosen your country, it is time to decide where, within your country, you would like to visit. Many tourists will choose to visit the capital city of a country. It is often quite large and full of interesting things to see and do.
Activity 1
Before you go overseas it will be important that you learn a bit about the capital city of your country. Hop online and find out about the capital city of your country. Use this information to complete the five sentences below:
  1. The name of the capital city is Ottawa
  2. The population of the capital city is approximately 883,391 people
  3. In January, the weather in the capital city is usually January is the month that is characterized by gradually falling daily high temperatures, with daily highs around - 5 throughout the month, exceeding 3 degrees Celsius or dropping below- 16 degrees Celsius only one day in ten.
  4. The capital city is located in the southern (northern, southern, middle) part of the country.
  5. The languages most commonly spoken in the capital city are English and French

Activity 2
One of the most popular activities in Madrid, the capital city of Spain, is called ‘Bullfighting.’ It has been a part of Spanish culture for centuries. In bullfighting people called ‘toreros and ‘matadors’ fight with a live bull. The toreros do most of the fighting and, ultimately, capture the bull and tie it up. Once it has been caught, the matador joins the fight and kills the bull. Although most toreros and matadors are men, there are some women who also compete in the sport.
Not everyone supports bullfighting in Spain. In fact, about 30% of the population want it to be banned (stopped) completely. What do you think? On your blog tell us whether or not you think that bullfighting should be banned in Spain. Please provide, at least, two reasons to support your decision.
  1. As my belief, I would think that most of the population should stop the bull fighting as it could cause severe injuries to the 'toreros' and 'matadors'.
  2. My second reason is that I think as a job of being a 'matador' is cruel as he hs no right to kill the bull for no apparent reason.

Bonus activity
Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. Have you been to Wellington? If so, please tell us about two things that you did when you were in Wellington.
There was a very good reason for why I went to Wellington as on my stay there my family and I had a renewal on our visa. After renewing our visa, We ate in a Country-West themed restaurant called, 'Lone Star'.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to go to Wellington, follow the link to learn more about this very cool city: Discover Wellington.
On your blog, tell us what two things you would like to do if you had the chance to visit Wellington. Would you go to the botanical gardens or visit the Beehive? Perhaps you would prefer to go shopping on Cuba Street or go out for dinner on Quay Street…
If I were to be given another chance to go to Wellington I would explore all the wonderful caves.

I would also take the chance to visit the beautiful scenery nature has provided for us.

SML- Summer Learning Journey Day 1

                                         CANADA
Day 1 – Choosing a destination
The world is a very big and very cool place. There are currently 196 countries and approximately 7.1 billion people living on earth. For this project we are going to focus on just 10 countries across 6 continents – Canada (North America), Mexico (Central America), Chile (South America), England (Europe), Germany (Europe), South Africa (Africa), United Arab Emirates (Middle East), Japan (Asia), Malaysia (South-East Asia), and Australia (Australasia).
Please click on the World Map tab on the main menu. It will bring you to a big map. One by one click on the names of the countries and ready the ‘Quick Facts’ about each place.
Activity 1
After you have read the quick facts about each place you must choose ONE country that you would like to ‘visit.’ On your blog post the name of the country and tell us why you have chosen to visit it. Please give, at least, two reasons for choosing the country.
Image result for canada viewIt was a pretty big decision for me to chose from as there were a variety of 10 great countries. However, I made my mind and the first country I would like to visit is Canada. My first reason is because my cousin suggested that out of all the countries she's been in Canada would be Canada as she marks it one of her best as it has spectacular scenery. My second reason is that for me to visit my cousins, uncles and aunties as I haven't seen them for years.
Activity 2
On Google, research the country that you have chosen to visit and write, in your own words, three interesting facts about that country. They must be facts that weren’t already provided on the World Map.
 1. A bear cub named Winnipeg was exported from Canada to the London Zoo in 1915. A little boy named Christopher Robin Milne loved to visit Winnipeg, or Winnie for short. His love for the bear cub inspired the stories written by his father, A.A. Milne, about Winnie-the-Pooh and that's how the city of Winnie peg got it's name.
2. Canada is know for the biggest production of maple syrup as it is one of their biggest icons.
3. Canada is the World's Most Educated Country: over half its residents have college degrees.
Bonus Activity
Write a letter to a friend or family member to tell them that you are going to visit your country of choice. In your letter, please tell them where you are going, why you have decided to go to the particular country and how long you will be away. Feel free to invite them to join you, if you’d like!
Dear Mum and Dad, I hope you would like the idea of packing your bags and leaving. My thoughts is going to Canada, I hope you's like this idea! I have great reasons why this country is the right country for s to go and her they are: First of all think about all the great scenery Canada has, the CN Tower which is 553.33 meters tall and think about all the waterfalls especially Nigeria Falls. My second great reason is that We can finally visit my cousins, aunties and uncles as we haven't seen them in a long long period of time. I hope you've made the right decision to go and I hope you've bought those tickets already.
Sincerely,
Your Favorite and Only Daughter

Advent

The first day of Advent was the Sunday  the 27th of November in New Zealand. The word advent  in Latin, means  “adventus” which means the coming of Jesus in the  Advent calendar.  This also represents the anniversary of the birth of Jesus.  The advent wreath is the main symbol for advent this includes 4 candles. There are three purple candles and one pink one. The wreath is represented as everlasting life.

The last candle which is the pink one represents the virtue joy, this is a special candle as it means that Jesus is coming. The Jesse Tree is an old Christmas Tradition that first started in medieval times. The ornaments are used to help tell the story from the Bible to create the Christmas Story. The name comes from Jesse who was the Father of King David.

St. Francis of Assisi

For my Confirmation, I chose St. Francis of Assisi as a young adult he considered himself as a sinner. His father was a man of business and the last thing he wanted from his son was a man of God. Growing up in his life, he was treated like a king and people never minded on what trouble he caused and some people loved him as he spent his nights in wild parties. After his young life, he met a biographer and explained everything and Francis himself said, "I lived in sin" during that time.

One day he was walking through the countryside and came across a leper. He jumped down from his horse and kissed the hand of the leper. Soon after, his peace was returned and was humble again. Francis was filled with joy and felt the Holy Spirit in him. He turned back to the leper for his last waved but before he could raise his hand the leper has disappeared. From then on he always looks upon it as a test from God. His life was changed and that’s why I chose him as he turned into a humble man from a selfish man.

Making decisions

Scenario:
Emma has just made a neat new friend.  They go to town on Friday night and Emma notices that her new friend is shoplifting.  Her friend tells her that everyone does it and she should do it too unless she’s wimp.
         What would Emma do?

A. List Options:

1 Emma should ignore her friend and find another neat new friend.

2 Emma should shoplift with her friends to get more clothes as well.

3  She should tell her parents/caregiver.

B Say what is right or wrong about each option.
Option 1.  The right thing is to not be influenced by the bad attitude of shoplifting.
Option 2.  The wrong thing is that she and her friend would have to pay the fine.
Option 3. The right thing is that she wouldn’t have any problem as she hasn’t been influenced.

C.  Say what would be the consequences of each option for everyone concerned.

1.The right thing about ignoring her friend and telling an adult is so she could not follow the bad influence that has been showed to her.

2. The consequence would be that she would pay the fine following with her new friend.

3.  The right thing to do is to call the police in order for them to pay the fine and so that their parents would give them consequences.

S. Say what values you think lie behind each option and tick those that reflect gospel values -  the values of Jesus.

1. Wreckless

2. Influence

3. Thinking about consequences

E. Say which option you would have chosen and why.

  1. I would’ve chosen to ignore her and find a new friend, as finding a new and responsible friend is the right thing to do instead of being friends with a thief.

Summary:
Making decisions is the hardest challenge as the bad things may be hard to resist. On the other hand, the right choice is always the best decision as it’s not hard to ignore the bad influence.

Statistical Investigation

WALHT: write a survey using google form, use the feedback to create and display that date in pie graph and analyse the results.
Screenshot 2016-09-05 at 10.39.05 AM.png

This data tells me that  62.5% (⅝) preferred to have an iphone rather than using a telephone or an ipad as neither of the responses has voted for them.
Screenshot 2016-09-05 at 10.38.59 AM.png
From my survey I have found out that half of the responses favoured to have their meal in Macas other than the other fast food restaurants as neither of the responses like to eat in KFC and 3 of the responses likes to eat in Nandos.

Screenshot 2016-09-05 at 10.38.49 AM.png
The data tells me 62.5% ⅝ like other breeds of dogs, 12.5% ⅛ like Chow chows and a quarter prefer German Shepherds.

Graph-Data

WALHT: create graphs using a spreadsheet and to analyse data in those displays.
This graph shows that William has improved on his typing skills as he started with the time of 16 minutes, then increased his speed and finished on 10 minutes.

This data shows that it has mostly rained on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday throughout the whole week and hasn't rained Monday and Wednesdays.

This data tells me that as the months past by more people came to Emily's Weight-building program.

Compare and Contrast

Walht: Use key ideas to synthesise.

Compare and Contrast

Walht: compare and contrast information from 2 articles to identify similarities and differences.

Spelling graph

WALHT: Analyse and discuss data and displays.

Evaluation:
This graph shows me this person began with a record of 13 words. Then scored high to a score of 100%. The following weeks there was a bit of a mess up as this student has dropped down on her scores. This shows that he/she didn't really learn his/her's words.

Basic facts graph

WALHT: Use a spreadsheet to enter and display data.
WALHT: Analyse and discuss data displays

The data in this graph tells me that this person has aimed high to have a great mark. Starting with the percentage of 98. The following weeks this person has improved to a high score of 100%. The following week he/she has dropped down to 97.Then scored a consistent 100%. This shows that this child has been working hard to get a numerous mark.

Come here birdie, birdie!

L.I: My group created a presentation on how to build simple structures to attract birds.

This was the result after our inquiry this term where we built our knowledge about helping our garden to become pest free one of these ideas was to bring birds into the garden to eat the pests. The above is the result of our research.

Ahhh, a spider!

Spiders

Image result for spiders

 Spiders:
The approximate number is over 40,000 types of spiders in the world. Some spiders are really vicious and some are really harmless and some camouflage into their surroundings to catch their prey.
The Daddy Long Legs is a house spider, they eat pests that roam around your house, while other spiders eat insects and small animals. All spiders have something in common especially when they hate plants.
You can find all types of spider in every continent except Antarctica because of the penetrating temperature spiders can’t stand the cold. Their habitats can be found in caves, trees, under rocks, on the edge of oceans and some spiders live underwater such as the diving bell. The diving bell would spin on the water surface and collects air bubbles, The spider then pops up from under it’s web and breathes when it needs to.
The most venomous, dangerous and vicious spider is The Brazilian Wandering spider, for the amount venom it has. The spider lives in South America amongst banana trees. If the spider bites you, It would sink in it’s venom and there would be a 99% chance that you would die unless you get an injection from the doctors.

There are different kinds of spiders. Some are vicious carrying deadly venom while, others are harmless to humans but only to insects. Although, once you have the knowledge about spiders, you might think about adopting one as a pet.

Where do I go?

In a bright sunny day on April the 30th my friends, auntie and I went to the city because it was my friend Yssabelle’s birthday.

“Honk, Honk” I jumped in excitement because they were here. I quickly, popped my shoes on and went to the living room to kiss my brothers on the cheek as a sign of goodbye. I rushed to the door and blessed my uncle (placing the hand of a Filipino person on your forehead is a sign of respect in the Filipino custom).  Then I ran to the car and saw two of my friends at the back seats. On the way, we were talking about where we’re going to live once we pass the age 21, We planned to only live in a apartment for two years.
After  minutes of chit chatting, we finally reached our destination. We walked our way into a underground room full of arcade games. Suddenly, my eye caught the registration area. Both Yssabelle and I ran past Alessandra and my auntie. As my shoe lace wasn’t tied properly, I tripped over and luckily there was a bean bag or I would’ve  been sitting in a hospital bed sulking because there was shattered glass on the floor.
Luckily, my aunt wasn’t looking because she was glaring at the shiny jewellery invitingly  displayed in a shop’s window, if she had seen me, I would have be in great trouble.  I swiftly got up, acting as if nothing had happened. After all that chaos, my aunt paid our entrance fee leading to an adventurous place. We wore light blue gloves so that we could sense more than using our hands. As our feet were walking one bye one, our hearts were beating fast because we were really excited on what was at the other side of the door.
The first room was like a technology bridge leading to a door. However, the bridge started to shake as if I was in an earthquake. Luckily I managed to cross by using the skill of  crawling to the other side. As I got up I saw my friends struggling to get across, so I pulled down a lever so that it would stop shaking. Although, it was really hard to find the door because it was pitch black the second I pulled down the lever.
While they were trying to find an exit from the horrifying room, I was using the sense of touch so that I could find our way out. Suddenly, I my hands slipped among a wall and I fell into this hole. I looked up and saw a jungle full of trees. “Alessandra, Yssabelle!”, I yelled. Both of them ran to me and looked up. They were both scared on what was in front of them because it was pitch black. We converged together so that we would know where everyone was. .
As my hands were sensing the crooked walls I felt a long furry strip, “Ahhhhhhh”, I yelled, thinking it was spider. I ran as quick as a lightning bolt striking to the earth. Unfortunately, I lost my friends. On the tip of my throat I yelled, “Guys, where are you?” There was no response. I searched the whole jungle, but there was no sign of them. I had no choice, but to continue on in the maze.
As soon as I laid a step on the next room, my friends jumped up and scared me to death. However, the room was beautiful because it was a sparkly glass room. On the wall, there was a picture frame that had a pink painting. I removed my gloves as I was told and placed bare hands on it. “Nothing’s happe, Ow”, it shocked me. An electrical current stung me on the tips of my fingers and stung my hands like a bee sting.
I had a feeling the next room was the last room, because my friend Yssabelle said that the maze was short. Opening the door, my eyes caught the sight of weird crystal goggles. Once I popped them on, it looked like Yssabelle’s head was decapitated and the walls around us were made out of crystals. After wearing them, there were zorbing balls, which were like human sized hamster balls. However, there were people in them so we just skipped that room. My eye caught a glazing door, that had signs saying, “COME IN, THE MYSTICAL DOOR,” and so on.
Alessandra opened the door and a blower blew wind and leaves to us. It was really hard crossing it because the force from the machine pushed me forward. I finally made it to the other side, there were millions (I mean millions) of pool noodles leading to the end of the maze. I swam to the other side, imagining that it was a swimming pool. Once I got to the end, I saw my auntie waiting there saying, “Well done!” My friends and I ran to her and hugged her because we were grateful to her for paying our entrance fee.

I had real fun going to the Odyssey Sensory maze and next time I hope that there would be more doors that would lead us to mystical places or rooms that had clues. It  would have to be the best experience of my life so far. I look forward to my next maze experience.
