Raspberry jam

Plan:
Raspberry jam
Technicraft
Cooking class

In this session the year 8’s had made a preservative type of food to store in a jam from or design brief they made in the last session.

Before doing the process of making jam. Students were informed to rinse the jar with warm water then place in the oven at 100℃. This was to prevent the jar from cracking once the jam has poured into the jar. Students then had to prepare the designated fruits they had chosen. If students chose apples they would have to peel and core apples then boil with a hint of water until mushy. If students decided to use fresh berries they would have to boil it with a bit of water for five minutes then mush it with a fork. Then add the additional ingredients. (see recipe below).

All students are looking forward to our next cooking experiene.

Walht: describe a book we have been reading in the past few weeks.

First day of Technicraft

Today was the first day of Technicraft, this is an opportunity for the intermediate students to learn- Cooking, Science, Electronics/Woodwork and Art. Cooking was the designated subject the year 8’s were chosen to do.
The first topic chosen was to make a preservative in a jar as a thank you present. The options selected were either jam, apple sauce, guacamole and chutney (anything that could be preserved). Students had to create a design brief for the designated recipe. A small variety of options were chosen and all were chosen in the sweet section. The most common was  jam and applesauce.  Students then had to list the items needed for the next session.

The next session of cooking would be great for them as they have chosen exciting recipes that their family members would enjoy.

Recipe:
Ingredients:
1kg strawberries hulled
6 cups of sugar
1 ½ tartaric acid

  1. Put strawberries into preserving pan.
  2. Crush lightly with a potato masher or fork.
  3. Add sugar and stir thoroughly.
  4. Bring to boil for 5 minutes.
  5. Add tartaric acid and boil rapidly for a further 5 minutes.
  6. Pur into hot clean dry glass.
  7. Cover jam with jam covers.
This will keep up for 1 year. Makes 3 x 350ml jars.

First day

Today was the first day of school and I met a new Filipino girl who just arrived from the Philippines. Her name is Athea. I would describe her as a quite shy and nice person. However, once you get to know her she really has a wild spirit. Athea loves playing volleyball and she has won a couple of Medals form the past games she won. As a side hobbies Athea loves to dance as it helps her to free her mind form all the things that's going on. I'm astounded that Athea has accepted the role of being a member of the St. Patrick's school family and I'm sure that it's going to be a great year with her.
